Here’s What to Consider When Purchasing a New AC System

air-conditioner-purchase-considerAn efficient and effectively working air conditioner is an essential addition to any home in the state of Texas. We don’t even want to imagine getting through one of our summers without one. But if your system is aging or you’re considering a New Braunfels, TX air conditioner replacement, then now is a great time to do so.

However, there are a number of factors you should consider when making a purchase such as this. Here are a few.

Unit Size: It likely makes sense to you that air conditioners need enough power to cool an entire home. However, they can also have too much power—or be too big for your living space. When an AC system is too large for the space in which it’s installed, it goes through a process called short cycling, where it rapidly turns on and off. This is highly inefficient for the cooling system and costs you more than you should be paying.

Efficiency: Air conditioning system efficiency is measured in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings. This details how effectively the unit will be able to do its job. The higher SEER rating the system has, the more effective it is, and the less it will cost in monthly fees to cool a living space. As much as your budget allows, it is a good idea to look at systems with the highest SEER rating available.

System Options: If you think you’ll be in the market for a new heater next year in addition to your AC system, then a heat pump is a great choice for you. It offers the benefits of both a heating and cooling system for year-round comfort and optimal efficiency.

You may also want to invest in zone control cooling if you purchase a central unit. Zone control systems allow you to adjust the temperatures in individual rooms so that you don’t have to cool a whole house when some areas are unoccupied. Zoning increases your efficiency as well as your comfort.

Your Budget: You may want to purchase a less efficient system since it is more affordable upfront. But this is not the only cost you should be considering. Think about what you’ll be paying month to month. A higher efficiency system is going to save you significant amounts of money on a monthly basis, making up for the initial cost of the system. Of course, this will vary depending on the type of system you buy and what your specific home cooling needs are. But, in general, higher efficiency means lower costs in the long run.

Location: The outdoor unit of your AC system needs an unobstructed place to stand. You’ll want to think about your landscaping and common debris in the area. Anything from lawn mulch and gravel to leaves and twigs can impact your air conditioner’s functionality. Obstructions can be a problem indoors as well: make sure that furniture will not be blocking your vents.
