Steps to Take During an Air Conditioning Emergency

Summer is officially here, although it’s been hot enough already to use our air conditioners on a regular basis. As such, the last thing you want to deal with is an air conditioning system that suddenly breaks down when you need it the most. These types of air conditioning emergencies can’t be predicted, but when one hits, you’ll want to move quickly.

Intense heat can be unbearable and sometimes even cause health problems, and without proper air conditioning your house can quickly feel like an oven. Our team is proud to offer emergency air conditioning services with no after-hours charges. However, when an air conditioning emergency does crop up, there are some steps you can take on your own to move the process forward.

Troubleshoot Your AC

It’s natural to go into panic mode when the air conditioner shuts off in the heat of the day. Before you pick up the phone to call in an emergency, however, check to see if there isn’t a small problem you can remedy yourself. Take a look at your circuit breakers in the home to make sure the power hasn’t been cut off. If so, restore power and see if that corrects the problem.

If your circuit breaker shorts out again after this, it’s time to call in a repair service. You will also want to check your thermostat to ensure it hasn’t been programmed incorrectly or even accidentally turned off. And finally, once these two factors are addressed look at the outside portion of the air conditioner to make sure that no leaves or debris have covered the vents. Once you’ve checked all these factors, if you are still experiencing problems, then it’s time to call a professional.

Keeping Cool

Once you’ve scheduled emergency services with your HVAC technician, you’ll want to keep the AC system turned off until they get to your home. Running your AC will only cause more damage. In order to try to keep as cool as possible until help arrives, lower the shades in your home to reduce the amount of sunlight that streams in, dress in lightweight clothes, and keep hydrated as much as possible.

Also, try to avoid the upper stories of your home. Heat rises! Lastly, if you have any ceiling fans or portable fans, try turning them on to cool off.

If you have an air conditioning emergency in San Antonio, TX, contact Riteway Service Company right away. We do not charge extra for emergencies or overtime!
