Cost-Effective Ways to Boost Heating Efficiency

It is the beginning of a new year, meaning we all have a chance to start fresh, reflect, and think about ways in which we can do better. If one of your resolutions is to cut back on spending, consider improving your heating efficiency. We still have a couple of months of chilly weather ahead of us, so you’ll be running your heater consistently for a little while more. It’s not too late to start saving this winter.

There are numerous ways in which you can boost your heating efficiency, some costing not a single penny! Maintaining your heating efficiency is an excellent way to keep repair costs and utility bills to a minimum. Plus, it’s great for the environment! Below, we have outlined some of the various things that you can do to boost efficiency and save money.

What Can You Do?

  1. Utilize your curtains: Using your window curtains wisely is a great way to harvest warmth from the sun. Opening the curtains on your south-facing windows is a great way to draw in free heat. Just be sure to close your curtains at night to keep the heat inside.
  2. Take advantage of your ceiling fan: You might be thinking that it sounds counterproductive to use your ceiling fan in the winter. However, turning your fan on in reverse can actually help circulate hot air throughout your home, so your furnace won’t have to work so hard. Plus, it can even help you feel warmer without having to turn up the temperature.
  3. Upgrade to a programmable thermostat: Setting an appropriate temperature for various times throughout the day is important. A programmable thermostat allows you to create a heating program around your own personal schedule. A programmable thermostat will automatically lower the temperature while you’re at work or asleep, which could save you hundreds on heating costs. Speak to an HVAC professional about your thermostat options.
  4. Check and replace air filters: A clogged air filter reduces airflow in and out of the furnace, making it harder for the system to circulate warm air throughout the home. In addition, it could cause the system to short-cycle, which is extremely inefficient. Replacing the air filter every 1–3 months is a great way to maintain optimal efficiency.
  5. Invest in duct sealing: Did you know that up to 30% of warm air can escape through faulty ducts? That is a lot of wasted energy and warmth. When your ducts are properly sealed, your system won’t have to work so hard to push air through the vents. If you suspect you have ductwork issues, don’t attempt to fix it yourself. A roll of duct tape won’t cut it. You need professional duct sealing services.
  6. Schedule regular maintenance: Regular heating maintenance in San Antonio, TX  is the best way to ensure your system is running efficiently. An HVAC technician will thoroughly inspect your system in order to spot and correct minor issues before they become major. Plus, maintenance is key for extending your heater’s service life.
